"Christian atheist" sounds a little funny, but I have defended what I take to be the mythic core of Christianity, in several articles (some links below). Just as they say that war is too important to be left to the generals, the mythic upshot of Christianity is too important to be left to exoteric Christians, Christendom, and the organized religion. I don't think the problem is just Catholicism, though. It's the split beteen esoteric and exoteric readings of the gospel narrative. And it's also the split between the historical Jesus and the Pauline Christ of faith.
