Certainly, progress depends on values and nature doesn't care what we do. But the civilized values in question are hardly arbitrary since they drive the Anthropocene. Certain cultures are more effective than others in empowering our species at nature's expense. Humanistic modernity was revolutionary in that respect, and liberals are pro-modern whereas conservatives are effectively against it.
