Certainly, no deity with a humanoid mentality would be happy with children suffering. But that just takes us to the same distinction between the God we'd prefer to worship, and the creator deities that might nevertheless exist. The question is why God should have to conform to human conceptions of morality. We'd rather he do so, and of course our religions' scriptures reflect that, but there are also mystical or esoteric suspicions that those preconceptions are naive and wishful.
