Certain individuals might not need religion, but what about society at large? It's curious how secular societies seem to replace theistic religion with another set of myths and rituals, as in a civil religion. Look at the Nazis, the Soviets, and the American Dream. There's also Dostoevsky's challenge about existential freedom in God's absence.
It's interesting that you suggest that natural laws amount to a lifeless deity. That's the kind of pantheism I also explore (some links below).
