But works would have been irrelevant if God's kingdom was soon to arrive, as the early Christians expected. If you think the world's going to end soon, concentrating on improving the world with works would be foolish and vain since God would moot all such efforts anyway.

Of course, what happened instead is that history overturned the early Christians' vain apocalyptic message.
