But if there's a "consciousness ladder," meaning there's a difference, say, between more and less enlightened forms of consciousness, there are also better or worse interpretations of nature. So nature wouldn't be a clean slate.

At least, there would be certain models we'd have to incorporate, such as the objective one of zombified physical processes, from science (links below), and perhaps an aesthetic one from a mystical, transhuman standpoint. There's also a naive animistic one that follows from our intuitive personifications.

A relativist would say these are all equal, or there's no basis for comparing them, but I think some perspectives are best for different purposes.
