But feeling like you're united with something isn't the same thing as being united with it. Obviously, joy is different from alienation, but whatever unity happens in a nondual state, it happens within the mind. The body is still quite divided from its environment, complete with its filers, membranes, and unconscious self-interest.

So there are different senses of "oneness" at play. I'm talking about physical, causal oneness, as in oneness with the flow of natural events. You're talking about a mental trick of feeling as though you were at one with everything (even though the person couldn't be explicitly aware of everything). The second kind of oneness is a matter of reducing the ego to release a childlike state of joy. I wouldn't say that mental oneness amounts to a metaphysical kind.
