How is having a pen name vain? Wouldn't a boastful person want to sign his real name to everything he did?

The reason to have a pen name on the internet is because there are loonies lurking about who wouldn't take kindly to some of my writings, and I'd rather speak the truth without having to worry so much about them.

Is that "vain" too or do you just not know what that word means either?
