Blocking's certainly an option in extreme cases, and that's an interesting possibility, to automate some of the responses.

If there weren't a potential audience, that would change things too. Of course, there's vanity in supposing that these comments will still be read months or years after they're written. But it's at least possible, and that possibility presents this challenge and this extra stress for writers who try to retain their intellectual integrity.
