At some point the parents of Gen Z must have realized what was happenning with social media, but they hardly complained much because those Gen X parents are part of mainstream society, working as managers in those very tech companies and elsewhere.

But perhaps it's not so much a case of surrender as one of spoiling. Gen X overprotected their children, and addictive apps only reinforce that infantilization.
