As a revenge fantasy against Rome, Revelation might be satisfying, although we still find plenty of irony and bathos here since Christianity inherited the reins of the Roman Empire, and how did the Church fare? Did the Church rule in a way that demonstrates the superiority of the Christian gods? Didn't Europe go through a dark age when Rome collapsed? Didn't things improve dramatically in Christendom mainly when there was a turning away from Christianity and a deeper appreciation of ancient Greco-Roman naturalism and humanism?
