Are you sure you read the article? I'm criticizing Democrats here for not knowing how to do politics. They can govern and fix problems by deferring to experts, but they can't sell their message unless their success in governing speaks for itself.
So Democrats' underestimation of Trump is perfectly consistent with the thesis of this article.
The GOP wants a big government too. They just want it devoted to their anti-Christian causes, to the military and to supporting the rich. They want to shrink the government's capacity to help the lower class in response to capitalistic excesses. That's why Trump increased the budget deficit when he was in office. The libertarian talking points are fantasies.
