Are you saying that idols are necessary, part of a natural process? I'd agree that they're part of a natural process, and I'm actually about to write an article that will touch on that point. (I'll be comparing theistic religions to corporate brands, expanding on something Yuval Harari says.)

But I hold out the possibility of existential authenticity which requires that we don't surrender unknowingly to any such idol. We can create our meanings as long as we don't take them too seriously. With ironic, postmodern or transhuman detachment, we should be humble enough not to be sanctimonious about our fictional gods and collective pastimes.
