Are you saying beliefs about God are "of no particular importance"? I doubt religion would be so universal if it were psychologically, socially, politically, and historically so irrelevant. I agree that some beliefs might be private in that no one else is interested in refuting or accepting them (aside, perhaps, from family members). But religious beliefs seem pretty consequential. That's what Sam Harris argued in "The End of Faith," when he tied terrorism to militant Islamist beliefs.
