Are rocks and oxygen atoms alive, then? Is the moon conscious of our planet? If those are false dichotomies, I think you'd have to answer yes to both questions.

If life emerges as you say, from certain complex, evolving systems, that's an explanation of how life isn't metaphysically fundamental. So that explanation is consistent with the dichotomy in question.
