And you're saying that subversion tends to be ideological? Certainly, to subvert some establishment, you may need to demagogue the issues to build up a base of support, in which case you'll at least appeal to ideologies that can galvanize that support. When conservative Christianity's involved, the demagogue may assume the pose of a persecuted minority even if the group in question is dominant.
I'd maintain, though, that even if some insiders are also subversives and their ideology isn't just a false front for the mass's benefit, there would be a rival dynamic stemming from the insider's empowerment. Power makes the leader cynical or practical, not ideological. So there would be an inner tug-of-war, in that case.
