And why should we be spreading joy? If joy was all that mattered, shouldn't we just lobotomize ourselves and take drugs or build a matrix device (a virtual world) and escape from the unpleasantness of reality? Isn't that what religion is? An escapist fantasy?

So the philosophical question that remains is whether we're obliged to reckon with reality even at the cost of our happiness (as in existentialism) or whether we're obliged to be happy at all costs (as in hedonism).

By the way, I don't think Jesus was a hedonist. He taught his followers to sacrifice themselves in helping others, not because it feels good but because God commands it and we should love God more than nature and more than ourselves. And if you don't think that theistic morality isn't subject to philosophical criticism, you've got another thing coming.

But yes, there's a big difference between theory and practice, and as Woody Allen frequently dramatized, it's possible to overanalyze life.
