And those other benefits of joining a religion are likely social, which means potentially there are secular versions of those benefits, too. You could join a club or start a family, and so on. If religious people are nevertheless happier than secular ones on average, that's likely because secular society tends to split us up (with consumerist addictions, informational siloing, and so on), or there's less meaning associated with social groups.
