And that's how I understand true mysticism too: we're left with flawed metaphors because the truth is ineffable. We can experience some of that truth in peak states of consciousness, but interpreting them is another matter. I haven't gotten to Sufism yet in any detail, but it's in some upcoming chapters in a couple of books I'm reading on Gnosticism.
