And assuming that's right, my thesis about conservatism in this series would swoop in to explain why conservatives fake their popularity: they reject the humanistic assumption about the equal human rights of all persons.

So they'd say many of the liberals don't deserve to vote because they're not "real" Americans, for example. They'd subscribe to a hierarchical (social Darwinian) view of society, according to which the elites deserve to rule over everyone else, even if that leadership requires that the leaders lie and rig elections and so on. This is conservatism's cynical, dangerous presumption.
