All I say about the Stone Age is that there was a sociobiological division of labour which the love bond served. The same could apply to animals. But feeling emotional about a mate isn't the same as telling stories to fool each other. That self-deception is more likely a human trait.

I suspect other cultures are more pragmatic about romantic love, like the West used to be. But indeed, there may be other cultural ways of looking at romance that would complicate the picture I provide.
