Actually, I have a big article coming out probably this Friday on the profound role of psychedelic drugs in history, religion, and even politics. I've argued that these drugs are the source and substance of religious experiences, as well as being the bane of organized religions.
But that's different from interpreting the meaning of those experiences. The religious experiences might be profound, but they're open to naturalistic, nontheistic explanations. Jung's interpretation wasn't really theistic since he thought the psychnaut explores the unconscious mind, not an extraterrestrial intelligence.
