A retreat from grounding life in an abstraction? Maybe, because personifying the ultimate cause makes that divine cause less abstract. But God has a mystical side too, especially the "philosopher's God" that gets conflated with the folk's friendly deity.

My point there, I think, was just that all cosmologies or ultimate theories of everything are shaky, especially if they're offered unironically or imposed as dogmas.
