A religion or a philosophy is certainly different than a business. The self-help industry is a business and its promoters have a conflict of interests. A privatized hospital in which the doctors both try to make a profit and heal their patients would have similar dual loyalties. So it's capitalism that corrupts the self-help field, just as commerce corrupted the medieval Catholic Church. As long as a philosophy or religion isn't overtaken by business concerns, its practitioners needn't be so hypocritical. Mind you, there are other grounds for hypocrisy too, for failing to live up to our ideals.
